The NHS has recently announced the introduction of a new weight-loss injection, Mounjaro (tirzepatide), sparking significant public interest. At Eric Moore Partnership Medical Practice, we understand the curiosity and questions around this development, and we’re here to provide some clarity.

What Is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is an innovative injection designed to aid weight loss by suppressing appetite, making you feel fuller for longer. Clinical trials have shown impressive results, with individuals losing up to 20% of their body weight.

Initially, the NHS will make Mounjaro available from March 2025 for individuals who meet the following criteria:

  • Body Mass Index (BMI) over 35
  • At least one obesity-related health condition, such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease

However, access will initially be limited to patients under specialist weight-management services, with a wider rollout to include GP practices expected later in the year.

When Will Mounjaro Be Available?

The NHS rollout plan for Mounjaro is extensive, with a phased introduction to ensure services can manage demand effectively.

  • March 2025: Mounjaro will be offered to those with the highest medical need under specialist care.
  • Over the next three years: Approximately 220,000 individuals are expected to benefit from the treatment.
  • Long-term plan: Wider access to Mounjaro could take up to 12 years to ensure NHS services are prepared to handle the demand sustainably.

At this time, GP practices like ours are awaiting further guidance from the NHS on how and when Mounjaro will be available for more patients.
