Childhood Vaccinations

Protecting Your Child’s Health with Essential Vaccines

Vaccinations are a safe, effective way to protect children from serious and preventable diseases, including measles, polio, and whooping cough. At Eric Moore Partnership Medical Practice, we are committed to providing high-quality vaccination services in a caring and supportive environment, helping to keep your child healthy and contributing to the well-being of our community.

Why Are Childhood Vaccinations Important?

In this video, a GP reassures a parent about vaccinations for her child.

Vaccinating your child according to recommended schedules is one of the most important steps you can take to protect their health. Childhood vaccines work by stimulating the body’s immune system to recognise and fight specific infections before they can cause harm. Here is why they matter:

  • Prevention of Serious Illnesses – Vaccines protect against diseases that, if contracted, can lead to severe health issues, hospitalisation, or even death.
  • Community Immunity – When a majority of the community is vaccinated, it helps prevent outbreaks and protect those who may not be able to get vaccinated due to medical reasons.
  • Lifelong Immunity – Many vaccines provide long-lasting immunity, ensuring children grow up safe from preventable diseases.

Recommended Vaccination Schedule

Our practice follows the national vaccination schedule, ensuring your child receives all recommended vaccines at the right times. Vaccines are typically administered at the following ages:

  • At Birth – BCG (if required) and Hepatitis B (for high-risk infants).
  • 2 Months – Vaccines for Diphtheria, Tetanus, Whooping cough, Polio, Hib, Hepatitis B, Pneumococcal disease, Rotavirus, and Meningitis B.
  • 3 Months – Second doses for whooping cough, Polio, and others, plus Rotavirus.
  • 4 Months – Third dose and Meningitis B booster.
  • 12-13 Months – MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella), Hib, Meningitis C, Pneumococcal booster, and Meningitis B.
  • 3 Years and 4 Months – Pre-school booster for Diphtheria, Tetanus, Whooping cough, Polio, and MMR booster.

What to Expect During Your Visit

Our goal is to make each vaccination appointment as comfortable as possible for both you and your child. Here is what you can expect during a vaccination visit:

  1. Consultation and Guidance – We will discuss your child’s medical history, answer any questions, and provide information on the vaccines they will be receiving.
  2. Safe and Gentle Administration – Our trained healthcare professionals administer vaccines carefully and quickly to minimise discomfort.
  3. Post-Vaccine Monitoring – After vaccination, we may ask you to stay briefly to ensure there are no immediate reactions. Our team is ready to offer guidance on managing mild side effects like slight fever or tenderness at the injection site.

Frequently Asked Questions about Childhood Vaccinations

Are vaccines safe for my child?

Yes. Vaccines undergo rigorous testing and monitoring to ensure they are safe and effective. Side effects are mild, and serious reactions are extremely rare.

What should I do if my child misses a vaccine?

If your child misses a scheduled vaccine, contact our practice as soon as possible. We can help arrange a catch-up vaccination to ensure they remain protected.

Can my child be vaccinated if they are feeling unwell?

It is safe to proceed with vaccinations if your child has a mild illness, like a cold. For more serious symptoms, it may be better to wait until they are feeling better. We can help you decide during your appointment.

The Benefits of Timely Vaccination

Ensuring that your child receives timely vaccinations offers them protection during critical stages of growth and development. Vaccines are designed to align with the body’s ability to build immunity, helping prevent diseases when children are most vulnerable.

  • Peace of Mind – Vaccines provide reliable protection, helping you feel confident in your child’s health.
  • Reduced Health Risks – Vaccination drastically reduces the risk of many severe illnesses.
  • Contribution to a Healthier Community – Vaccinating your child contributes to community-wide immunity, protecting other children and adults from disease spread.
